How a painting
becomes fabric.
How can the intensity of the brushstrokes in an original painting be translated onto fabric without losing their impact?
By using the yarn density and pile thickness of chenille weave, we reproduce the "weight" of oil paints. This involves a unique Japanese re-weaving technique born in Koyaguchi, Wakayama in 1877, and the hand-crafted processes of skilled artisans.

Nanae Mitobe
"Paint has weight. It remembers the hand. What remains on the canvas is the gesture, preserved."
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, this painter is based in Vienna and Chiba. They graduated from Nagoya Zokei University in 2011 and studied under painter Shigeru Hasegawa. From 2021, they have been enrolled in the Oil Painting department of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, studying under painter Masato Kobayashi. From 2022, they have been enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. They continue to paint "faces" using a unique method of grasping oil paints from metal cans with their bare hands and layering them almost sculpturally. They are known for their "DEPTH" series, which was first shown after a stay in the United States in 2014, and in 2020, their work "I am a yellow" was acquired by the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art. In the same year, they received an Encouragement Award at the "VOCA Exhibition 2021."
